ABOUTHello! I'm Emma Shafer (she/her/hers) and I am a director, actor, and writer. In a nutshell, I am dedicated to the collaborative process, expressing stories through the body and movement, exploring topics that challenge us, and featuring narratives centered around female experiences.
I started training with SITI Company in 2016 and have been heavily influenced by their nonhierarchical way of working, along with the training of Viewpoints and Suzuki. From their methodologies, I have come to consider myself a daughter of the postmodern movement. The act of questioning and pushing against Western cultural norms and values feels relevant and necessary to me. We as artists hold the special privilege of reflecting what is and creating what could be in society through story. We have the choice to uphold what works and shed what doesn’t. I am interested in telling stories centered around female experiences. Stories about the intricacies of communities. Stories about coming of age and the discovery of self. Stories about bodily autonomy. Stories full of love and play. Stories that bundle up the messiness of being human. At the end of the day for me, the process, the people, and the story are the most important. The medium is simply the vessel to get the story to the audience. |
